Carol A. Gill

Carol A. Gill, 59, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2008. Her generous spirit and kind heart touched many thousands of students' lives over her 37 years at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

Carol was born in Akron, grew up on North Hill, and had lived in this area all her life. She attended St. Martha's grade school and St Mary's High School, graduating in 1967. Carol earned a Bachelor of Science degree (cum laude) in Education in 1971 and a Master's Degree in Technical Education. She was a member of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority.

She returned to her alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School as a business teacher and began her career teaching shorthand, typing, and office practice. She was head of the business/computer department and taught several classes in computers. She worked through the advent of computer technology and was instrumental in helping to develop the computer department at STVM. She became the Technology Coordinator and began teaching part-time while devoting the remaining time of the day to the technical needs of the school. In the early 1990's, she became the school's intervention specialist and coordinated student's class schedules. She was an Academic Advisor since 1996. She introduced cutting edge programs which enabled the school to ease the burdens of teachers, better inform parents, and assist students.

Carol had dedicated her entire professional career to education at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. In addition to her time spent in the classroom, she had served at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School as Department Head of Business/ Computer Department, Registration Committee, Sophomore Class Advisor; Administrative Council; 7/8th Grade Visitation Team; Technology Committee, Retention Committee, Leadership Team and Administrative Team.

Carol received Teacher of the Year Award at STVM 1994-1995 and was the recipient of the prestigious Fr. Thomas F. Mahar Outstanding Alumni award in 2006.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy C. Gill. She is survived by her mother, Jean M. Gill; sisters, Kathleen (Charles) Weber, Barbara (Thad) Kee, and Robin Gill; long time and very dear friend, Pam Godshalk; three nieces, six nephews, and 10 great-nieces and nephews.
