Howard
Joseph Mowcomber,
80, of Amherst, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at New Life Hospice Residential
Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Nanty Glo, Pa.
He lived in Amherst for 46 years.
He graduated from North High School in Akron and
served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mowcomber had owned and operated the Amherst Ben Franklin five and dime, which
is now owned and operated by his son Howard; and owned and operated the Amherst
Fabric and Trim Shop.
He was a member and past president of the Amherst Rotary Club and received the
Amherst Jaycee Distinguished Citizenship award in 1966. He served on the
Regional Planning Commission from 1965 to 1968.
He graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor of science in business
degree and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. He was an avid
bridge player.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Clara (nee: Byers); sons Howard Craig
Mowcomber and John Edward Mowcomber both of Amherst; daughters Sue Ellen
Mowcomber and Mariclaire Glova, both of Duxbury, Mass.; brother, Tom Mowcomber
of Banning, Calif.; sister, Phylis Poole of Tallmadge; and 14 grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his sons Thomas Mowcomber in 1997 and James Mowcomber
in 1985; and his parents, Howard Mowcomber and Ethel Mowcomber Mitchell (nee:
Scheatzle).
Friends may call Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Hempel Funeral Home, 373
Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph
Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive. The Rev. Lawrence Martello and the Rev.
Thomas L. Weber will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
