Janie Harris-Davis
Janie Harris-Davis was born July 10, 1912 to David J. and Pearlie H. Bell in Quitman, (Brooke County) Georgia. She departed her life on April 16, 2007.
She attended the public schools in Quitman, Georgia and relocated to Akron, Ohio in 1928 where she attended North High School, Hammel Actual Business College and The University of Akron. She was joined in marriage to Robert L. Harris of Meridian, Mississippi July 31, 1933. He preceded her in death April 4, 1971. She joined Wesley Temple A.M.E. Zion Church under the Pastorate of Rev. James P. Foote, and was a faithful and loyal member. She was a charter member of the Evening Star Club, and a member of Livingstone College Chapter and always a supporter of the church's programs and outreach activities. She married George Martin Davis of Warrensville Heights, Ohio on August 12, 1982, who preceded her in death on December 21, 1987. Her active years were spent in the field of Social Services. She was office and Equal Employment Officer for Summit County Community Action Council. She retired in 1982 as assistant Budget Consultant for the Area Agency on Aging for Summit, Stark, Wayne and Portage Counties. Mrs. Harris-Davis was always actively involved in community affairs. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Akron Urban League, Vice President of the National Council of Urban League Guilds, and member of the Quarter Century Club of the National Urban League. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees Post Matron Phoenix Chapter #96 PHA, Past Grand Chairman Appeals and Grievances Amaranth Grand Chapter State of Ohio. She attended the White House Conference on Aging in 1981; this was a lifetime experience which received nationwide coverage for the various important resolutions that were passed, that made life much easier for senior citizens. She received many awards and recognitions during her lifetime.
Mrs. Harris-Davis was also preceded in death by her mother and father, David and Pearlie Bell; sister, Ruth Connelly; and brother, David Bell. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Barbara Morris of Miami, Fla.; nephew, David Bell of Covington, Ga.; great- and great-great-grandnieces and nephews; cousin, Pearl Bertman of Akron, Ohio; sister-in-law, Winifred Bell of Akron, Ohio; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services Monday, April 23, 2007 at 12 p.m. at Wesley Temple AME Zion Church, 104 N. Prospect, Rev. Dr. Curtis T. Walker officiating. Interment at Glendale Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 11 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form at Rockynol Retirement Facility, 1150 W. Market St., Akron, Ohio, and condolences may be sent to 285 Channelwood Circle Apt. 716, Akron, Ohio 44307.
